It will cost me almost 200.00 fo two passports just to travel when I want to. I can see paying for the paper they are written on but isn't that why we pay taxes? To have these services already?

I mean really, is $10 a year so much to ask?

The process that is involved in producing your passport is tedious.

First there is a background check that takes apx. 120 man hours to preform. Then a complete criminal check in the USA and through Interpol.

Due to the fact that it is illegal for a convicted felon to have a passport and it is a felony to provide a passport to a felon, the people who do these jobs are very careful and very closely monitored.

Honestly, you should be happy that you live in a country that allows you to come and go as you choose. Ask people in China, North Korea, and Cuba if they would be willing to pay $100 to leave their countries?

well first i agree that it is outrageous..

but also... it's good for 10 years (i think).. so really it's only 20 per year....and yeah u pay taxes but the gvt is seriously in debt so they will take every opportunity to make more money off you. the machines that make these are very expensive, and obviously the salaries of the gvt workers are factored in

my passport was 170 rushed, and only like 100 standard... so maybe different offices charge different amounts & there is no federal regulation of this.

maybe they also charge this much as a deterrent for loosing your passport, which would just put more strain on the offices

Because they think if you can travel, you have money to help the state.Anything more worse I know, but it is the worse system.
