Let's see, there are many ways of finding the cheapest air fares. Do lots of comparison shopping on air fare sites like expedia and hotwire. I've been able to find some incredible deals on hotwire so definitely see what they have. Look at all of them and then compare them to the airline websites. Sometimes the airlines are cheaper for certain flights.

Also worth checking out are consolidators, or "bucket shops". They buy tickets in bulk from the airlines and sell them to the public at a cheaper price. The only bad part of them is sometimes they don't have a flight going where you want or when you want and it usually takes a long time to get a hold of someone at the office. But if they have something at the time you want and you finally get an agent it can be so worth it.

Sometimes you can find a cheaper ticket depending on the airport you fly into. For instance when I went to London, it was cheaper for me to fly into Gatwick rather than Heathrow. See if your destination has different airports.

Day of the week is also very important. It might surprise you how much money you can save by flying on a Tuesday instead of a Monday. Try sticking to Tues, Wed, or Thur to avoid business travel fares. You can usually save some money if you buy your tickets way in advance or don't mind staying the night on stand-by if your itinerary is really flexible. This is called APEX (Advance-Purchase Excursion) fare.

In general it's cheaper to fly in off-peak seasons and avoiding big holidays. I know sometimes it's unavoidable but just don't be shocked at the higher prices during the summer and around Christmas.

I included absolutely everything I have learned on my trips so I hope it's a help to you!

There are many good ways. It does depend on where you are flying from and what you final destination will be.

Some of the supersaver lines don't post their rates on the major sites. An exaple would be Allegiant which offers some of the lowest fares in the business, but only to and from specific locations www.allegiantair.com/

Travelocity.com is usualy pretty competative and so is expedia.com

Finally if you don't really care what time of day you fly or exactly which air port you'll land at try naming your own pice for fares at priceline.com

One caution on priceline.....if your not serious about the price you give, don't fill out the form. It works like an auction. If your bid is accepted, your credit card is automaticlly charged and you own the ticket even before you know the itenerrary

I hope this helps

From Yahoo answers I learned that www.kayak.com is awesome for checking prices. It compares the cheapest fares from different airlines. not only airlines but it does cars and hotels too! I am leaving for Germany next week and I got a great deal using www.kayak.com for my car and flight! Also www.cheaptickets.com is great but it also shows up on kayak.

i've got had the final luck with Yahoo FareChase. that is under the Yahoo return and forth link. what's remarkable is that it pulls the charges at as quickly as from the airlines internet sites. I then flow and purchase my value ticket at as quickly as from the airline's internet site. (i'm too scared because of the horror thoughts i've got heard to apply Orbitz, Expedia and so on.) that is rapid and that i think of extra undemanding to apply than lots of the others.

I've always done best by first checking a travel site like travelocity or expedia, then going directly to that airline to make the purchases. Saves about ten to twenty bucks.
