I can trace my family back to Nova Scotia, but I lose track of them there. From what I understand, Sprague is German, English or Dutch.

Hey Paul,

Swyrich.com says it is English as follows:

Origin: English

First found in Gloucestershire where they were seated from very ancient times, as Lords of the manor, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: John Spragg who settled in New England in 1765; Richard Spragg arrived in Philadelphia in 1814; Anna, Francis, Jonathon, Mercy, Ralph, Richard and William Sprague all settled in Plymouth Mass. in 1623.

There is a genforum for this name, see the link below. On the genforum you will meet distant cousins discussing the Sprague name. You can search the messages, post messages, find people to send notes to, maybe even a family tree branch for Sprague that is actually well researched and yours.

Family Search.com has over 300 entries for Sprague too. This shows a majority of English, but there are other European contries listed for some of the entries.
