The average number of steps is 2,640. This is based on individuals that have a constant two foot stride. If you stride is longer, the # of steps will decrease a little. If your stride is shorter, the number of steps will increase a little. But, 2,640 is a good average baseline and will get you pretty darn close. Cheers!
ADDED: --> Also: If you measyre out a distance of ten yards on the ground, walk it and have someone count the number of steps it takes you. Now, multiply your number of steps by 176. That'll tell you how many steps it will take you to complete a mile. (there are 176 10 yard increments in a mile)

How long is your step? A mile is 5,280 feet - you would have to divide that by the length of your average step. Here's a strategy: go to your local high school or college track, off-hours. Usually these are about 1/4 mile per lap. Count the number of steps it takes you to go around once, then multiply by four. You then have your answer as well as your average steps per mile.

1 mile is 5,280 feet.
lay a tape measure or yard stick down and measure your OWN PERSONAL stride length, and divide 63360 / number of inches long your step is... (63360 is the number of inches in a mile.)

If you want your own rate, you must measure. A great recommendation came from "Befit4free." That is the way to get your own stride info. Just note that if you are walking very slow, most people take shorter steps. If you are walking fast, they tend to be longer. Running is even longer.
As examples, I am 5-10, but I have a fairly long inseam, about 34" in walking shoes.
When I walk slowly -
Inches per step = 25.33 (2501 steps per mile)
Rate = 24.6 minutes per mile
When I walk briskly
Inches per step = 31.09 (2038 steps per mile)
Rate = 18.1 minutes per mile
By walking a trial distance, you can get your different rates and steps/mile:
1. For your trial distance, measure a precise distance, down say a hall in your office
(my length was 57 ft unimpeded as I started and stopped)
2. Walk up to the line so that you toe the start line as you start a stopwatch (on your phone if you have a phone app for this)
3. Continue at pace and count steps up to the end mark. (in my example for brisk walking I counted 22 steps)
4. press stop as you cross the end mark without changing stride. (Now you have the time for that rate, slow or fast) (in my brisk walk example it took me 11.75 seconds to travel 57 feet)
5. DISTANCE PER STEP - divide the distance you walked by the number of steps you counted to the nearest half step or so) (in my example it is 57 ft/22 steps = 2.59 ft/step (or 31.09 in/step)
6. MINUTES PER MILE - For your mile rate, take your time in minutes and divide it by the number of miles you walked in your trial (for mine, minutes = 11.75 sec/ 60 seconds/minute = 0.1958 mins and for 57 ft / 5280 ft /mile = .0108 miles, so 0.1958 mins / .0108 miles = 18.1 minutes per mile.
For myself, I figure I need an average of about 2,140 step for each mile and I try to walk about 10,700 steps per day for 5 miles.
Good luck with your goals

Well, measure the length of your stride and work it out from there...
I would probably (??) take more steps than you, and a big man would take fewer...

The recommended goal for better health is about 10,000 steps per day. And, approximately 2,000 steps equals one mile.

It depends on how big your steps are.
Now, you could measure the length of your strides and do the math.
