1850 census says ohio county is 44th district of Virginia. VA history shows ohio county is in West VA since 1770. trying to track family history. Were there two ohio counties???

West Virginia became a state during the Civil War--I believe 1863. Virginia's western counties seceded, became West Virginia, and joined the Union.

There was no West Virginia in 1770. West Virginia was stolen from Virginia by the Yankees to repay loyalists from northwest Virginia over their role in the War between the States.

A good source to find out what has happened to different counties is The Genealogical Helper, a book that is published yearly by Everton Publications.

I would say that it is likely that Ohio Co VA became part of WV when that state was created in 1863, but the book would tell you for sure
