Surely, Christianity did not create a niche for itself. There were many believers before the time of Christ. And, of course, before Christ there were no Christians since Christian means a believer in Christ, and before Christ there was no Christ to believe in.

Many refer to Christianity as "the way" and personally I believe that came from earlier religions or beliefs, before Christ, that saw Christianity as "the way." And so, many people who already believed in God, saw the existence of Christ as the way to the Supreme Being and so Christianity was a continuance of a belief that many already held. Therefore Christ was the proof of God or "the way" to God.
And, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost became the basis for their beliefs. With the man called "Jesus" as a center point, because he was a real man. And so, Christian.

For some people Christianity simply fills a niche. That is to say, their faith is either shallow or they are decieving themselves. For true Christians, Jesus fills a niche.
