Yes, it's common and I think it's hereditary. My grandmother had it, my mother and my sisters and I have it. The bone actually drops as we've gotten older. Used to be you went to the store and bought some moleskin to try and ease the pain. I have heard that they can go in and shave some of the bone off the bottom (oh heck no). Now my sister got orthotics and that's what I suggest. See a podiatrist. They can make these orthotics for your shoes that will take ALL the pressure off the ball of your foot. It's amazing!

it sounds like planter's wort
it's a calcium buildup
sometimes wearing bigger shoes will help
and, sometimes a shot of cortisone will help
it's not uncommon but painful especially when you first get up in the morning
