I would call your local animal control. There are some areas when Akitas are on the dangerous dog list. Also, some insurance companies include Akitas on their lists.
But it differs from city to city. I'd call. It is too bad if they are on the dangerous dog list. Akitas are beautiful, dignified dogs and handled correctly are no more dangerous than your average Golden Retriever.

Depends where you live if you need a license for the dog.
Most vets, when giving yearly shoots and checkups, also issue the license. If that's the case in your community and you don't have a license -- that tells me your dog is not getting the care it needs. I strongly suggest you check that out.
Akita's are hunting and guard dogs, they have to be trained and managed with that in mind. They require a firm but understanding touch, they tend of "offend" easily. They do prefer to be the only the dog in the household.
Personally, I know (and have known) several Akitas, most are not kind to small animals. But otherwise very loyal and sweet. Some are aloof. I pass one on my jog -- all she wants is a treat, but absolutely NO petting. That's just her.
Here are a couple of sites that list dangerous dogs, including the Akita.

If you are in the UK there are only about 4 dogs on the dangerous dogs list and tha Akita isn't one of them
Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 prohibits four types of dog:
* the Pit Bull Terrier
* the Japanese tosa
* the Dogo Argentino
* the Fila Brasileiro

No you don't and no they aren't on the dangerous dogs list.
This is assuming you live in the UK.
The main thing to remember is that they were bred in Japan during it's feudal period.They were used for hunting but their main function was to guard the owners from attack,with their lives if need be.This means they tend to be suspicious of strangers and may bite a stranger first and ask questions later.
This combined with their powerful jaws means that they must be very well trained and muzzled around strangers.They should not be allowed off the lead either as they tend to be aggressive to other dogs of the same sex.

that's been stated ok already. that's not the breed, yet fairly the owner lots of the time. definite, there are some alpha canines that are born nasty, yet lots of the time, loss of ideal training is the main clarification for undesirable and aggressive canines. And the clicking is definitely at fault for stereotyping specific breeds. individually, i might fairly artwork with lots of the huge breeds than the little pocket piranhas. And in basic terms a splash addition...Akitas is probably no longer severe on the risky dogs record because of fact they are not an exceedingly regular breed. That record is made up from the form of incidents concerning canines. very regular breeds would be greater on the record because of fact there are extra of them to reason a concern. one million% of one thousand Labradors are nasty, yet 10% of one hundred Dogos are nasty. yet, the breeds might value an identical because of fact there have been 10 nasty canines of each breed.

I had 2 Akitas at one time and my home owners insurance premium went up because of it. They said the were considered "aggressive breed". I do believe it does vary state to state. We did go through a lot of training, but I tell you what, they were probably the best behaved and smartest dogs I have ever owned.

I'm not too sure if they are on the dangerous dogs list, but my friend had one and she was so timid she used to let us paint her toe nails and put ribbons in her hair I would trust her with a child but then one day she snapped and killed one of the other dogs in the house for no reason that we can work out. So in that respect you have to be careful as they are such big dogs they will do damage if they snap and they are bred for guard dogs so they are all capable of snapping.

There are a bunch of things you should know about dog training but we are going to discuss what I feel are some the most important. Keep in mind that these are only some of the things you should know. Go here http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?2ZHU
1. Repetition is the number 1 principle of dog training. Dogs just like humans learn by doing things over and over in order to get better.
2. Dog Training can and should be fun for both you and your new pet.
3. Training sessions should always be short but sweet. I never work a dog more than 15 minutes in a session to keep from losing the dog's attention. You should train you dog at least once a day but never more than three formal sessions a day.
4. Your goal should be that each training session is just a little bit better than the last one. You need to always strive to make the training better, slowly. I mention this because quite often I see people who do daily training sessions but the dog never gets better and it is not the dogs fault.
5. Having patients is very important in dog training. Losing your temper does not work with a canine it simply makes things worse.
6. Exercise is very important in the training process to get rid of all the dogs nervous energy.
7. Taking your pet for walks is very important because it develops serotonin which gives your dog a feeling of well being.
8. Always be sure to give your dog a bunch of praise in your training. It is your dog's paycheck for doing a great job.
9. Never hit your dog. I have heard people say I never hit my dog instead I roll up a magazine and swat it. It's the same thing... hitting is hitting.
10. After each training session be sure to do something that your dog will enjoy. Take it for a walk, throw the ball or maybe even rub its belly. Just do something that makes the dog look forward to the next training session.
These are things that I teach my dog training students as well as my dog training clients. I hope these things will give you something to think about when training your dog. Spend some time training your dog daily and you will both reap the benefits.
