This is about the Iranians seizing 15 British sailors. I don't think they were investigating "smuggled cars."

I think they got busted in a spec op gone bad (US Navy Seals are considered sailors).

Robert S -I wasn't suggesting the US Navy. I was suggesting there might be a Special Force element in the Royal Navy or Royal Marines

That makes sense. There is a quite a smuggling trade going on there. The Royal Navy has been taking down smugglers and pirates for a while in that region.

They were in Iraqi territorial waters and the whole thing was witnessed by two fishermen. Whether they were actually stopping smuggling or not is irrelevant. For Iran to kidnap British sailors outside of Iranian waters is an example of Iran escalating tensions.

I believe it... but they were Royal MARINES...

I spent 5 deployments in that area with the US Navy enforcing UN sactions against Iraq... watching for them smuggling oil, dates, and other proscribed materials. Iran at the time permitted Iraqi ships to sneak along in Iranian territorial waters (for a piece of the action / profit).

I have NO doubt that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard got alittle frisky...

Why don't you think that? There are several ways people can raise money illegally. Do you not think Iran has cars? Do you not think Iran would have a market for cars from countries who do not do business with them?
