We have our dog (Alsatian) 4 years now and my sister found a cat 5 moths ago. They haven’t met each other since yesterday because we kept the cat to the first floor and the dog to the yard. Any way they "met" yesterday and it was horrible! At first they looked at each other for a while and then the dog started barking and the cat freaked out! Can I do something so they can get along? Summer is coming and the cat will start to go out to the yard and I don’t want to have...Victims!!

Put the cat in a carrier so she cannor run. Runing will trigger a prey drive in the dog.

Put a leash on the dog Dog show style make him lie down with his back to the cat.

If the cat hisses or spits, shoot him with a water gun.

Do not along the dog to growl or bark at the cat. He needs to give her space. (Back to her)

Once you can do that with the dog off leash ingoring the cat,

Leash the cat and make the sit by each other. All dogs in a pack are made to stay in one place by the leader at times for over an hour.

This will make the dog and cat a pack.

Your dog thinks the cat is an invader, if it's a yard dog it's probably used to guarding the house, and here it sees an intruder and wants to get rid of it. It has no clue it's a pet.

You have to train your dog how to stay calm, like with a sit and quiet command, and then bring out the cat. You need to show that the cat is part of the family unit, not an invader.

So to make them get along, work on your dog's manners, they're easily trainable after all.

some dogs and cats can get used to each other, but some breeds of dog see cats as prey and really won't ever be trustworthy around them.
