It depends on how long your hair is and how well it holds in a style. If you are talking spiky sticking straight out then, you are going to need lots of product. You want to start out with a strong hold gel, when its wet and then blowdry or allow to dry on its own.
Followed by a hair cream, you could do a texture cream something with a strong hold. You can find things in your local store beauty aisle that say for texture and hold. You have to be careful though when applying the product to dry hair that you dont put to much if it is a white cream that you dont end up with a white residue on your hair. I have heard of people using Elmers glue, which dries clear. I am not sure of exactly how well it works.
Finish it up with a freezing hold hair spray. For shorter hair you can use less for longer hair you use more.

Use gel when wet. Then tons of hairspray after it is dry. Also, blow drying the hairspray right after you apply it helps it to dry harder and stay stiff longer! My son has a "modified mohawk" and this is how I help him keep his spiky all day!

I don't know about the girls... but Will of Christian Rock band Audio Adrenaline uses Elmer's glue for his huge mo-hawk.
