If I had to wager a guess, I'd say you either have a hiatal hernia (where the top portion of the stomach gets caught up in the diaphram and can be squeezed) or acid reflux. Do you have any burning? Do you regurgitate a bit after a meal? Both signs of acid reflux. If there isn't any burning, then you perhaps have the hernia, which is not a serious condition, just uncomfortable. It's worse when lying down, which would explain why it bothers you more when you go to bed. When you take a deep breath, it might hurt more because the lungs would put pressure around the hernia. I would go see a gastroenterologist, who will be able to diagnose it easily. Good luck.

Listen to what Gail Y said....and soon. Even having the scope is no pain at all as you are in a sleep state and lots of happy medicine and is over in no time. Very good advice!

Being worse in the morning.. it sounds like it could be acid reflex. But that shouldn't get worse when you breath in. Go to the doctor!
