You don't have to transport the item-under-test to several differenct facilities. That saves time, money on shipping, contract red-tape among different test-labs, and paperwork (the bean-counters love that).

Whether that's the 'greatest' advantage I'm not absolutely sure, but pretty sure. It's the only real advantage I can think of.
