They go to the room and the hotel manager notices that he didnt give them the $5 discount he was supposed to. So he send the bell boy to the room with $5 to return to them. The bell boy can't figure out how to split $5 between 3 people, so he gives them each $1 and keeps the other $2 for himself.

Now each man has $9 in the room and the bell boy has $2.

$9 x 3 = $27 + $2 = $29

Where did the other dollar go?

Each man has only 1 dollar because they each gave 10 to the manager. So actually each gave nine 27 plus the 2 dollars the bell boy walked off with making the amount given to the manager 25 dollars.

The equation is flawed. The "$2" is already included in the $27, since the bellboy was given the money from the manager, not the men in the room (You can't add ANOTHER $2). The new total amount in the equation should be "$27," since that is the amount outlayed by the men.

This is a very famous question. It is used by college math instructors to show a flaw in the base 10 system. There really isn't an answer!
