I thought my migranes were getting better because I visited a neurosurgeon and he put me on Topomax, but my migranes have started to come back, and i've been having headaches daily now and i'm worried that they will get worse. I'm starting to think I should get a second opinion, but MRI's are expensive and I don't really want to pay for another one and have them say oh, it's nothing to worry about. What should I do? Thanks!!

I do have insurance, but I would still have to pay about $100 or so for an MRI.

If it is allergy related, how would I go about getting allergy tested??

consider undiagnosed food allergies-often overlooked by docs. If you have an allergy to wheat, soy, eggs, or dairy, the very medicine he put you on contains those allergens. You might consider allergy testing, or try an elimination diet, or keep a food journal to see if you develop a migraine withing 36 hours of eating certain foods

Two things - I totally agree with the suggestion to get the MRI done, asap. Your long-term health is more important. Yes, $100 seems like alot, but compare that with the worse-case scenario.....

the second thing, there could be a couple things going on. Have you kept a headache journal? If you dont' know what that is, basically a log keeping track of what you've eaten, meds taken, etc etc, and if/when you get a migraine. It makes it easier over time to pinpoint what triggers them. I get them, bad, and have had them since middle school (I'm 36 now). Even though some of mine are unavoidable (PMS related ones are the worst), I know there are certain foods and situations that will automatically trigger a migraine, and I have learned to work around that. The food additive MSG is my top one. In addition, sulfites (like in red wine) and nitrates (like in lunchmeats) are other triggers. Read your labels, because those things are in SO MUCH of the food we eat today. And don't rule out things like low blood sugar and stress.

I feel for ya, I hope you get some resolution soon!!

I also take topomax. Depends on the mgs you are taking, how long you have been on them. Plus why a surgeon? I see a neurologist for mine. Remember surgeons are cutters. I dont know your condition or what other meds you are on. Go for a 2nd opinion . There isnt anything wrong with that. Your Dr should not have a problem with it. Insurance should pay.
Good Luck

Sorry..Only the doctors can help...Go for the specialist. Recurrent migrain is a killer.
It's worth to spend a few hundreds now, and know the cause.
DNT TAKE YOUR HEALTH FOR GRANTED.
The headpain could be a sign of something else. You never know..Think long term, gal.

Someone I know suffered near daily with migraines. She went through a migraine-focused physical therapy program and is now practically headache-free.
