Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:
Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!
The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.
Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.
Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.

I think that you are a great girlfriend. It's nice that you want to give him something special like that. I'm sure that he will like it. The diary will give him something that he can see old memories in and that he can place new memories in later. You're on the right track.

Hi, well it sounds that the both of you like sentimental things so I think he might like it in this case but myself I wouldn't give a guy a diary for his birthday but that's just me.

A journal is a good gift for him, but I think your thoughts about him, or your days, moments that you think of him would be great. Pictures of you, or special moments that you can tell him about but share with. Maybe a video journal from you to him, talking to him, so he can hear and see you talk to him is a good idea. Long distance relationships are hard enough, either way, it will keep him close to you. Good Luck!

Why don't you ask him, if he would like to receive anything special from you for the birthday. If he is the type who will not maintain a diary(like me), it is not going to be of much use to him.

I don't think I would call it a diary...that is for girls. I would more likely call it a journal. You could call it a journal of your relationship...put stuff in there that you feel or things that remind you of him. Ask him to do the same when he gets it and then send it back to you....then just keep it going back and forth. Super for memories.
be cool...
