" Am I doing something wrong or are they lacking something in their diet? I leave him outside for 15 min to play and as soon as I turn my head he goes for the dirt. I've placed his own stool in many of the the holes so he doesn't go back to those but he make new ones seemingly as fast as I repair them. Is this a game? Can someone give me some insight?"

Your dog is a dog to start with. Although we think of them as a extended part of the family,we tend to forget they are dogs.
This digging is a natural instinct. Some dogs dig to bury bones, some to get under fence and some to make a cool place to sleep while out side. I have 4 dogs,Only 1 that is a digger. But she can dig for all of them. Its hard to brake a digger ( I have had no luck with mine ). But it actually can be done if you have the time and money..You can lay chicken wire down all over the yard. They want digg after they fine the wire there. Hurts there paws. You can put a shock collar on him and watch him start to dig and every time he does--shock him..It doesn't take to long to get the idea with that one but they forget and you have to do it again at some point.
I just keep a pile of top soil and dirt around so I can fill them in as they get so big..Mine had one big enough to swim in and they all did that...But I wouldn't get rid of my kid if I couldn't brake him from digging holes so I will keep my hole digging dog Sissy ( Black lab---6 yrs. old ) We are her family from the day she left her natural mom. It is a responsibility I took on and I don't take it lightly. Its up to you...Learn to live with it or try these few things I've given you tips on.. Good Luck but remember SOMETIMES AN ANIMAL HAS TO DO WHAT AN ANIMAL HAS TO DO !!!!

siberian huskies are known diggers. but i think most dogs loves to dig. its their way to release all their stored energy. they do it maybe because they are bored or something like that. it's best that you should train your dog starting as a puppy not to do those digging. if not, try to minimize their digging habit. spend some time with your dog. like going out in the morning and do some running or sprinting. tire him, a tired dog is a happy dog.. make it enjoyable for you and your dog. teach him also basic commands like sit stay come etc. understand your dog and love him. you're his master and you must be a good master to him. do some research about your dog's breed. it will help a lot.

I think it's a dog game. A Great Dane can dig a trench that takes a tractor to fill in. I think he may have had Snoopy, the flying ace, in mind, and digging trenches like in WW1.

At least it keeps them busy, and uses up enough energy to make them quieter in the house.

We have a few craters in our yard, and because we are in a high snake area (FL), we have to be cautious and make sure they are filled in.

Typically, dogs are cave dwellers. Not only for security purposes, but get out of the weather (whether it be cold, hot or wet).

Some do dig out of boredom, and some (like my female) will tunnel on the trail of a mole.

I had a bassett hound that did that. Use to drive me up the wall. Finally ask the vet when I took him in for his shots. Vet told me that they (well at least hounds) have a very strong sense of smell. Said that they smell something and want to dig it up. But sometimes the smell is just a scent, nothing else. He told me to try to play with him, to keep him the house more, basically try to divert his attention.

What kind of dogs do you have? Certain breeds are more prone to digging, such as Dachshunds or Great Danes. There isn't much you can do about it that I know of, my dog likes to dig holes where we walk, my theory is that he wants a laugh at my expense.

It' s instinct. to hide , preserve food in ancient times. Most dogs have lost that instinct and just know that they used to dig holes. Also dogs used to carve out and enlarge holes and cave ins for housing.Again, they lost the reason for the digging. Foxes , wolves, and other canides still have their instinct intact.

Dogs dig because they are looking for a comfortable spot to lay in. It is not a game, unless you teach them that it is.

Bet his name is Ruff. And that is the way he likes it. It is a game, it is fun watching you play in his holes too putting presents in them. He has the energy. He needs to be played with, taken for a walk - he is going stir crazy.
