my son goes through phases of tics and habits, some of which can be disturbing to others. usually it is a sign that he his really bothered about something or finding things really difficult to cope with it. Try and get to the bottom of his anxiety. He may not have the the words to explain how he is feeling. and this could be the only way he has of expressing himself. I wish you luck and all the patience in the world. This has to be one off the hardest conditions to deal with cos hardly anyone understands it. it is not like anyother medical condition and parents always question themselves about wether they r a good parent. Just keep loving him for who he is and dont let the world tell you any different!my thoughts r with you

Perseveration is characteristic of autistics (and neurotypicals sometimes). We go through something new every few weeks or months with our son. From my experience, it just will run its course until he's on to something else. Probably not what you wanted to hear but we both know that the way you would discipline a typical child doesn't apply to those on the spectrum. One thing we have had limited success with is by going overboard with praise when he doesn't do whatever undesireable action for a period of time ( a few hours or so). But this doesn't always work.

For spitting in particular, I would try a sort of social story-but at an older kid's level-explaining how it is not acceptable to spit unless absolutely necessary. Then oultline what necessary means-i.e. a bug flying in the mouth, ect.

Good luck. This is one of the annoying perservations but some of them can be quite good for a child's development-like drawing or reading. He'll probably move on from doing it eventually.

I agree with the suggestion of a social story. My son is much younger and he went through a spitting phase. He would spitt in our faces when he didn't like what we said to him. Along with the school, we taught him about respect with a social story. After I talked to him about it once I ignored it. He liked the extreme reaction that he got. And within a couple of weeks it stopped. Now he tells his little brother that it's wrong to spit. I know it frustrating, but some things just take time and persistance to get through.

i have aspergers syndrome (on the autistic spectrum) and have gone through many 'phases'. is your son seeing any psychologists? i think they helped me overcome a lot of things so you should ask your doctor to reffer you somewhere. also, he might just grow out of it as some of my obsessions just stop suddenly, even if i've had them for years.

Have you talked to his doctor about it? They are much better equipped to handle this situation that we are here.
