Mrs wants to know as she has never been swimming on her period before and wonders what other women do. Do they wear a tampon? Not bother swimming? Or just swim and hope they dont bleed everywhere? Do swimming athletes have this problem???

It is safe and hygenic. With or without a tampon there is no leakage. The reason is the pressure of the water in the swimming pool is greater than the pressure of the blood. (You can test this by sitting in the tub for a bit.)

However, when you exit the pool, leakage is free to begin agan. So, to be on the safe side, a tampon is probably a good idea. Changing it out after swimming is also a must.

I suspect most swimming athletes use the pill to regulate their periods, but that's more for competitve advantage than anything else.

You know, I think more of them wear tampons without anyone being the wiser. The whole swimming issue is what forced me to learn how to wear a tampon in the first place. However, just keep in mind that she should change it the moment she's done swimming, because it certainly does get wet from the outside.

I have never had a problem with it, and I've attended water aerobics classes for years and I've never known anyone to take a week off because it was that time of the month. And I'm sure most of your star athlete swimmers don't take time off as well.

Swimming is safe for women to do while on their period - as long as she wears a tampon. A tampon is a must. If she is having cramps swimming will actually help relieve them.

She would wear a tampon to swim without any problem..obviously if you don't use that, then you're bleeding in the pool, which is not really hygenic.

Well it is both highly unhygenic and UNSAFE for women to swim during their period. One, as you've said, they can bleed and contaminate the pool with blood and bacteria (menstrual blood is full of microorganisms and bacterias). Two, it is highly unsafe for women to be doing this because during these times the cervix is open (because the reproductive system is discharging matter, blood). It is very easy for water to rush into the cervix and into the uterus of the female which can cause tumors and possibly lead to cancer. Physicians advise women to take a bath in a closed space (such as bathrooms) so as to lessen the air, and take a shower instead of a bath in the tub. In the shower, she is in a standing position and lesser water can go to her genitals. Although, washing of the vagina isn't prohibited but she should do it on a standing position or sitting on a toilet (some women wash their genitals in a crouching position which is really bad). The trick here is to prevent as much water as she can from getting into her cervix. There are a lot of care that a woman should consider regarding bathing during her menstruation, and being in a pool (especially a public pool) will be very risky for her health. Not only can water cause harmful effects to her body, but also there are microorganisms too. The disadantage for the pool is that it might get dirty with her blood, but the disadvantage for the woman is to her health. It is best if she stays away from pools, tubs, or a swim in the sea (which has even more bacterias and other microorganisms in it plus "saltwater") while she still has her period.

God bless!
