There are many nice places and many not so nice (like any city). My sister lives in Arnold and has friends in Mapperley. Both of these are reasonable with good transport links into the city. Arnold, however is on the edge of Bestwood and Top Valley which aren't so nice.
On the other side of town West Bridgford, Ladybay, Woodborough are all OK.
Certainly avoid St Anns, Radford, Lenton.

I've heard it's nice in the Forest but watch out for men in green tights. Not to mention the sheriff!
