The same reason that computer keyboards have a raised dot on the letters 'F' and 'J' -- to let your fingers zero in on them in position to press the other keys from memory. For telephone keypads, knowing your finger is on the '5' lets you know that the number '2' is the key just above, the number '7' is lower to the left, etc. For the numeric keypads, the order of the keys are reversed -- the number '2' is below the '5' while '7' is higher up to to the left.
This incidentally is where the term "touch typist" comes from.

It's for the visually impaired. The link I have provided says:
"Raised dot on '5' button
Nearly all our phones include a raised dot on the '5' button designed to help you find the centre of the telephone keypad by touch alone."

the raised dot on 5 on the numerical keypad on the phones and keyboard simply means that the number five is the point of origin for your typing finger, from the number 5, you mustbe able to mentally determine the location of all the other numbers, pressing them correctly even without looking at those numbers....so remember to always rest your typing finger on 5. try it....

Good question, I've wondered about it myself too but didn't bother to check with anyone. I thought it was for the blind but I am really really unsure. Would love to know the answer for this one.

it's a guide so that you don't have to actually look at the numbers to dial. same reason the "J" and "F" buttons on a keyboard have raised lines.

Well , just like your computer keys that also have the same thing, I imagine it's for those who can't see. Brail.

I think the main reason is to help the blind with the location of the keys.
