Windows Vista Beta: How to dual-boot Windows XP and Windows Vista; http://lifehacker.com/software/top/windows-vista-beta-how-to-dual-boot-windows-xp-and-windows-vista-179906.php
Dual booting or dual-booting is the act of installing multiple operating systems on a computer, and being able to choose which one to boot when switching on the computer power. The program which makes dual booting possible is called a boot loader.
Dual booting is found in many situations, such as those where different software is available on different operating systems but cannot be run on a single system. A dual boot configuration will allow a user to use all of this different software on one computer. Read more here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_boot

It is possible to have both XP and Vista installed on the same computer. However to use it on an external hard drive, you have to check that your mother board supports booting from a USB device. Like in the BIOS set up under the Boot Order section.
You would need to run the Vista set up from the CD. When it comes to the part where it ask where you want to install Vista, you would have it install to the external hard drive.
It should set up a menu that will appear whenever you boot the PC that will allow you to select which version of Windows you want to run.
You can, of course, only run one version at a time, and would have to reboot to get to the other version of Windows.

Cant answer for XP/Vista, but with W2k, all I do to run separate systems is to create a partition (Partition Magic) on my local hard drive, thus i have C drive & D drive. Then, run your PC XP will start. Insert your Vista disk, and install to D drive, a Menu is created on C drive. When you boot after that, you will have the option of running XP or Vista.
For those who say you cant have more than 1 O/S on a PC, I have had Windows 3.11, NT4 and Linux on the same hard drive, no problems.

Well, you like to live dangerously, but hey...it could be fun.
You can put another operating system on a different hardrive if you like, and go into the bios, and change the boot order to first to usb then hd0 or visa versa, depending on which operating system you want to have boot first.
or...
You can create a partition on your hardrive, and put one operating sytem on each part, but be sure to put the primary operating system on the c drive. Go into the bios and change the boot order to HD0 then HD1 as the second.
F10 and save.
Now when the boot happens, it will give you a delay on a post screen so you can choose which operating system you want to boot to.
Press F10 and save the new setting to the bios. (make note of any bios changes you make before you press yes)
Consider also that vista requires at least 1 gig of ram, a processor of no less than 2.4 and a video card with min. 256 onboard ram. Anything less, despite what microsoft says, will cause it to run like a old dog....slow
When it comes to vist...more is better...
Back up is always a good idea before doing anything major like this.

You can do this Manually (knowledge and research). Or you can use software to help you to do this. (Acronis Disk Director Suite with OS chooser) Either way you can only run one at a time and not both.

Yes you can, but you need to make sure your motherboard can boot from usb. You could also look into installing in a partition, but i suggest you research it and back up before any attempt, it can srew you up if you dont know what you are doing.
