There is no one way to meditate and different ways work for different people. I usually find it helpful to sit with my back straight, close my eyes and relax, take deep breaths and as I do I start to scrunch up my toes and feet as I breath in and relax as I breath out, then I work my way up my body similarly.

When I finish that, I go through what I have heard called the 'crystal countdown' where you visualize the color red and the number 7, then the color orange and the number 6, the color yellow and the number 5, the color green and the number 4, the color blue and the number 3, the color indigo (bluish purple) and the number 2, and then violet and the number 1.

If done slowly it should help you to get to your alpha level for meditation.

Good luck and Bright Blessings )O(

Meditation is an inner experience. It is not concentration since all can concentrate when they attend some works or driving or eating or doing any work. In fact mind is needed for concentration whereas for meditation mind is the primary hurdle. Intution and awareness play some role in meditation. Initially you have to select a secluded corner or a separate room if you can afford. Select early morning or the evening period for meditation. Do not sit on bare floor. a wooden plank raised four inches from ground is good over which you can spread a woolen cloth. This is to avoid the energy from discipating in the ground when you start real meditation. You can keep a candle light for meditation or any form or photo of godhead. Light meditation is easy and practical. See the flame for few minutes. Think that the flame is in between the eyebrow above the nose. Close the eyes visualising the light in the above spot. Take the light mentally from there to heart region. Think that light remove all darkness from heart and your heart is illumined. Take the light mentally to the eyes. Think that the light in the eyes removes all darkness in vision, and henceforth you will have holy vision. Likewise take it to the ears, the nose, the mouth or the tongue. In this process let the light remove all the negative things in those places and illumine each instrument to hear holy words, to smell good smells, utter noble words, consume holy food etc. Finally think that the light is taken mentally to all the parts of the body to illumine and to the head to remove all negative thoughts, cultivate positive thoughts. to the hand to do good works, helping the poor and downtroden, the handicapped. to the feet so that you will visit only holy places. practice this and you will find peace of mind. nagarajan.

Different things work for different people. Some people need total silence and darkness. Some may prefer to have some soft music playing in the background and candles or other soft lighting.

The important thing is to find what works for you. Carve out a slice of time, just a few minutes to start with, where you will be free from any outside distractions. Trying to clear your mind is the hardest part. It's like trying not to notice the white elephant in the room. Instead of trying to think about nothing, pick a scene that is calming to you - high on a mountain, a hammock on the beach, and just try to pull in as much detail as you can. Think of nothing but your relaxing scene. As you do this and eliminate all outside influences, you'll start to deeply relax.

The more you practice it, the easier it will become for you, and the more completely you will be able to immerse yourself in your peaceful, happy place. Good luck, and God bless!

Easy...
This answer can be long. If you want more information contact me.
You can start by lying on your back... head pointed North.
Try not to let anything touch you. Put you thumbs and index fingers together. If it's quiet you can hear a little buzz when you do that. Some people call it 'the voice of God'. It will get louder later.
Close your eyes and try to look up with your eyes closed until your line of sight would be about 20 degrees above the horizon behind you. Start counting from 100 backwards to zero. At the same time start numbing your body mentally starting with your toes. The idea is to stop yourself from thinking about anything else. Your mind is now busy counting, keeping your eyes back and numbing your body while relaxing. If you can keep to your tasks you'll be surprised at what will happen. That sound in your head will get louder and your conscious mind will be awake while your body is asleep. You can travel to cool places with your mind. Eventually, you won't have to do all those things becuase you'll be in practice and your body will be conditioned to where all you have to do is put your thumbs to your fingers to make it start up.

OK?

No need to sit cross-legged, but your spine needs to be straight. Sit in a chair if you like. Be comfortable, but do not slouch. Fold your hands easily in your lap. Close your eyes. Clear your mind. Try not to think of anything in particular. Concentrate on your breathing. Focus all of your mental, physical and spiritual energy on just breathing. Feel the breath as it comes in and goes out of your body. Be patient. There is nothing else you need to know. You just need to do it. This is the basis of Raj Yoga. Experiment, experience, dive deep. Expect to spend an hour or more on just this practice. That, is all.

Meditation is used to quiet the mind. What works for me is cleaning. The repitition of movement from scrubbing a floor or the humming of vacuuming helps me to quiet my mind. Relaxing in a tub with candles around or sitting in a quiet park and just looking at the sky works. Just anywhere you can relax and just forget everything will get you into meditation.

By seeing how far your mind's eye and ears can see and hear.

Lay down. Be quite. Control your breathing. Then see how far you preceive things. The birds in the trees. Cars two blocks away.

The idea behind meditation is to stop the world you have created in your head and replace it with the real world around you.
