where do I start? Where do I finish? What is the record? who holds it? are there any popular roads people compete for time on, which take several days or weeks to ride? How do I archive my ride, if I do intend to break records? Do I have to have money to archive it?

There is a race every year called Race Across America. It starts this year on June 10th check it out at www.raceacrossamerica.org. It starts in California and ends in Atlantic City. The record for a solo is a little over 8 days. A team of 4 has done it in under 5 1/2 days. They also have a web page outlining the cost of such a trip. They estimate at least $10,000 to cover support crew & support vehicle, hotels, food, etc.

Another good site is www.ultracycling.org. They have cross-state records, 12 & 24 hour records, and lots of other info listed.

All the above sugestions for sites are great. Just remember if you are out to set "Official Records". First you have to have an Offical to witness and judge the effort.
For distance records such as these, the Offical start and finish points for point to point records are Always City Hall for that city, not the ocean or city limits.
Then the one that is often overlooked, ALL traffic laws must be obeyed to be recognized as an offical record. Running a single STOP sign will have a record thrown out. Just ask Shenna Hogan.

The record was set in 1986, though there have been several records set since then, but with shorter, (about 196 fewer miles), distances. The '86 record was 8 days 9 hours 47 minutes, average speed of 15.40 mph* (*Fastest average speed), while the latest record was set in 1990 taking 7 days 23 hours 16 minutes but only averaging 15.24 mph.
