He could be meowing because he is in pain, so a check-up would be good just rule out anything physical. But some cats are just vocal, he's not a Siamese by any chance? My cats stand by places they're not allowed in to (like the closet) and meow. I find if you just ignore it they stop doing it because it gets not results. An like others have said water is a great deterrent.

Is he neutered?
Sometimes my cat (female) meows constantly and won't be quiet....if her dish is full and she has plenty of water, I'll pick her up and love her for a few minutes and when I put her down she'll just walk away and be quiet. So maybe your little guy just wants some extra love and kisses.

My 2 cats do that when they want to be fed. It would get interesting though when I would feed them before I leave in the morning and my husband would feed them when he got in from work (about 2-4 hours later) They are little scammers!!

Some cats meow more than others. Kittens meow more than adults. Is something stressing or upsetting him? Cats meow for attention, is he getting enough loving from his humans? I wouldn't "yell" at a cat for meowing.

Maybe hes telling you something. Mine does that when he either needs food, wants fresh water, needs his litter changed or is jealous when my g/f comes over and he has to share me. Cats are just crazy and aren't as solitary as everybody makes them out to be.
