I have neighbors who have chi's - one is a long haired, and 2 are short.
The short couple are crazy little things. But once the female became "a woman" she calmed down a LOT. The little boy is still insane. Neither have ever tried to actually bite me or my kids, and they are very friendly, just very loud. lol
The long haired Chi is as sweet as can be, as long as you don't do anything she doesn't like. (bang on something, hit someone, reach for her while she's on someone's lap, etc.) But that's after years of training and working with her. She was an abandoned dog, with major mental issues. It took my neighbor about a year to get her to chill out enough to be a good dog. She's absolutely beautiful though. She's got really thick fur, and can be mistaken for a pom easily.

My Knowledge tells me, you shouldn't get a chi, unless you must. If I had to choose which one for you, I'd say a long haired, as long as you keep it bathed. The short haired ones are just stupid-looking. Look around for a tiny mutt if you can. maybe a chi-mix. (My mom wants to breed some pom/chi mixes. lol) I will never have another purebred anything again in my life, because all of the ones I've had have either had health or mental issues. Mutts are much more unique too. If you could see my mutt puppy, you'd see what I mean.

That idea of the NJ chi's is a great idea. but it'd take a while to make a wild chi suitable for home-living. lol
Good luck.

Long hair chihuahuas are beautiful, however I am not one who enjoys all the grooming behind long hair.

So I have short haired chihuahuas. I don't think hair length affects energy level. I have 5. 3 of them are very laid back and have low energy levels. 2 have medium to high engery levels (oddly enough both my males LOL).

Rather than being concerned with the hair (get what you like and are willing to take care of), spend time with the dogs/puppies. You will be looking for one that has a lower engery level/ is less dominate. Ask the breeder (or whoever) about their personality. My youngest dog was always one to leave her litter mates and join the older dogs. She has a low energy level and is very sweet. However she has a sister that was hyper hyper hyper. As the breeder I knew that from watch them (BTW a good breeder will keep the puppies to 12 weeks and can answer your questions on personality)

I've got a long haired chihuahua. I don't think there is a difference behavior wise as far as long or short hair goes though?!

I prefer long long haired though, hence that's what i've got!! But both are really cute though and mine is a real sweetie with a great little personality, I couldn't be without her!

Look at lots of pictures on the internet to help you decide if you want long or short haired, but i'd recommend getting a chi despite what some shallow people say about them, each to thier own I say!!

Good Luck :o)

Actually, their personalitlies arent all that different. Some people say that the smooth coats are more hyper than the long but my long is far more hyper. I think it is more to do with their breeding and individual personalities. And long coats do not require much grooming at all. They never need to be clipped, just brushed.

I have two long-haired and one smooth coat. All three are pretty tightly wound. I don't think the length of coat matters as far as temperament goes. The interesting part is that the short haired one is the one who sheds the worst. She spends more time at the groomer's than the two long-haired!

you would be large with the two the fast or long haired, it fairly is a controversy of personaly selection which you will might desire to % on. the fast hair Chi, will for sure have much less grooming desires, yet different than occasional combing, a protracted Haired Chi will do exactly large! And breeding ANY canine would be a project and have its own threat! scientific emergencies arise for the duration of pup delivery and if your not arranged to handle them you will the two might desire to shell out huge funds to a vet, or take a seat there and watch the one which you love puppy die a terrible dying.

I prefer hair that will is shoulder length or longer, And also since that men who like females are more often then not right, they like long hair because it looks more feminine, as most males have short hair.

If you really want one of those little rats save money and get a cheap flight to the USA. Go to Camden, New Jersey, they have a huge stray dog problem and a large proportion of the strays are chihuahuas. You could pick on up off the street there and do everyone a favour.

The only real difference is, do you want to spendalot of time and/or money grooming the dog.
