I just asked this question myself not to long ago. And then I did it. It went fairly well too. This is what I said to him...
"I'm really sorry but this just isn't going to work out. I have so much going on in my life right now and I have to focus on me."
It's true, I do need to focus on myself right now and that relationship wasn't helping me to do it so it had to end. Good luck

Tell him that it's better if you break up, you want to be honest with him. you don't want to lie to him. Things just aren't working... And you wish him he'd be with someone who'll make him happy. You care for him, but in that way anymore. Have a Wonderful life....

easiest way email the most respectful way is face to face and be honest even if its painful. thats just as straight up as it gets.
