Up to the mid/late 1980's wards were generally segregated by gender.
Mixed wards were a result of cost cutting measures introduced after the internal market was imposed by the Thatcher Government to supposedly create competition and so improve health care.
The result of course was that hospitals had to employ more people to count money and fewer to care for patients so mixing genders on wards allowed patient care to be provided with fewer staff.
It will be difficult to get rid of them as so many more staff would be needed to go back to the previous duplication of services even though many patients are uncomfortable with the present system.

Its because the NHS never has enough beds so they put you in any mixed or not. Fell lucky you get a bed after being on a waiting list of 7 months months for an opation being on a mixed ward is the last thing on my mind. At least there was a bed.

Some hospitals are going back to same sex wards like it was years ago.It changes according to the times, and who decides what is best for us all.In my experience i think mixed sex wards are best, but not always without problems. Most people if had the choice would opt for single sex wards.

Might have mixed sex wards, but it's the same sexes in each bay area, no mixed rooms

Not all wards have male and female patients in them. I used to work on a respiratory ward they had one bay which was mixed sex that was due to these patients needing to be monitoired more closely such as, one to one care.

hospitals run on a budget and have differnt departments for patients and it would be too costly to have separate wards for men and women.
