My girls and I are going horseback riding, followed by a trip to the grocery store. They will pick out the ingredients for dinner and then help to prepare it. After the dinner dishes are done it's family game night. We take turns picking a board game and we all play it.

I think, when picking up your children from school, it is important to turn your attention to them, put down the cell phone, turn off the radio, and ask them about their day. Let them tell you what is important to them at the moment. And you can share with them some things that went on in your day. I worked at a preschool for a few years after college and I was surprised and heartbroken at the number of parents that picked up their children with a cell phone to their ear, totally ignoring the child. Sometimes barely even a "hello" let alone "how was your day?" Maybe the child had had a hard day at school, skinned a knee or got dis-invited to someone's birthday party (always the biggest threat with children of preschool age.) But the parent wouldn't know that because they didn't take the time to ask. When they got home maybe the child was cranky or extra sensitive, and armed with the right knowledge the parent could have been more equipped to nurture the child's particular needs that day. So my advice is to really tune-in to your child on the way home from school and use that time to connect with them.

When I go on trips with my G'kids, we do "sillly" stuff in the car. *Try and see how many diesel trucks you can count in 15 minutes. *Everybody pick a color of car, and see who gets the most before you get home. *Turn up the radio on a good song, or pop in a favorite CD, and sing your hearts out! *Stop into a petstore. ~~And a swing through McDonald's Drive-Thru and a quick picnic at a local park are always a hit!! Just have FUN:) Be a kid again!!
Good Luck!!

Have you been to the zoo lately? The animals are much more active and fun to observe when the weather is cool.

One of my kids' favorite activities when they were small was to go to McDonalds, get ice cream cones, then play in the playland.
