It really depends what features you're looking for and how much manual input you want. I took a year to find my new digital camera. I wanted a compact, fast point and shoot with a few little extras. It's a Fuji F30 which has is the best for taking pix in very low light (so great for indoors, in restaurants, at parties etc). It's fairly compact, it starts up and takes pic really really quickly (so you do actually get the shot you want and not the action a few seconds later)!
You can select pre-set modes for fireworks, underwater, portrait, natural light.....etc which really work. It has a continuous shooting mode which means you keep your finger on the shutter button and it continues to take pix for as long as you hold the button down (good for kids school sports days or other catching the action shots). It takes good movies with sound (for as long as the space on your XD card lasts - I've got a 2GB card in mine). It's either 6 or 7 megapixels and you have reduce this to 2 lower levels if you just wanna email pix and save card space. At 6/7 mp, that's good enough to blow up into at least A4 size. It has zoom in and out, flash on/off/auto, and a BIG display screen (no viewfinder but I don't miss that). I've owned 2 Fuji cameras now and I really rate them.
I bought mine in Nov 06 when it was a new model. High street price was £230 BUT with careful online shopping comparison sites and using online discount codes, I actually got it from Jessops online for £180!
If you need more info or want to look at reviews, check it out on Amazon OR ....the site that helped me most....

I am a Canon fan. They are reliable and excellent in quality.
I am not a fan of Japanese. But, Kodak and other non-Japanese don't make quality cameras with the features that I want. Go to Canon.com, they should have a camera for you from low end to high end.
Get TX1 or G7 for video recording and image stablization.
Get a SD model if you want a compact camera.
Geat the A model if you prefer using AA batteries. Good for people who keeps losing their charger and the battery is available everywhere.
I have the G7 and it's great. Now Canon has the TX1 which is even cheaper than G7 and has 720p video recording. If they came out with TX1 first, I would of gotten the TX1 instead of G7. G7 is very good, it has all the features you can think of. The LCD is bigger than TX1 and comes with 10mp instead of 7. I think anything above 5 is good enought unless you want to print a huge picture.

I don't know about UK, call American Express, I get extended warranty with my AE purchases. You never know if you might need the extra warranty. Things usually breaks down just after the initial warranty. Good luck.

Go for Canon. They have the SD800 IS for as low as 230 pounds (can't find the 'pound' sign on the keyboard). I'm assuming you're from Europe. Then this model would be known as IXUS 800 to you guys. It's a great compact camera, good for whipping it out from your pocket anytime, anywhere. Then again, it doesn't offer much manual control over creative settings. I suggest getting this if you're a casual photographer.

Canon is the best choice! I've got Canon Ixus 400 - really high quality, a tiny lady-type model, the size of a wallet. A cheaper and bigger version would be Canon Powershot.

T-10. But that might be a bit over 200 pounds.

I've used a Fuji 7.1 MP and had great success with it. There are so many great deals on cameras now. Two sites I use to find deals are tigerdirect.com and stealdeals.net which probably will ship to the UK.

Panasonic with efficient anti shake device is quite good, except at night; by dusk Fuji is better but requires an xd card

Aim for a 8Mpixel plus camera. That way you can produce commercial grade photos for sale if you want to.
