They will need to do blood work to make sure he can handle the anesthesia. I have had them done older with o problems.
I would at least have the vet check him out. There may be a health issue that is causing him to start behaving badly

Neutering the dog may help with some problems such as the whining and howling but unless you are able to keep him behind a high fence he may still get out and about once in a while as he has done it before.

KJ, that answer makes no sense. The testes are completely removed, how can it increase the cancer risk? I don't know if that is too old. For some breeds 10 is only middle aged. I would imagine the big problem being anesthesia. Dogs don't really take well to it to begin with and it just gets worse with age. The only way to be sure though is to talk to your vet.

There is not an age limit on neutering. It depends on his overall health, and what you are trying to accomplish with it. In a younger dog, the poor behavior that is associated with being intact can be helped greatly by neutering. However when they are older, some of the behaviors that they have will not go away by neutering them.
Discuss it with your vet, there are other things that can change a dogs behavior patterns that have nothing to do with being intact. (neutering does not increase the risk of testicular cancer - the testicles will be removed. I think they meant prostate cancer.)

He doesn't need to be neutered at this point; he needs exercise! The behaviors you describe are restless neurotic behaviors that scream "challenge me!"! A good walk or a game of catch will help keep his energy level balanced, which will calm the attention seeking actions. One good thing at his age, he doesn't need a lot of exercise. Make it count and he'll not only get to wear himself out he will also get quality time with you his master and love of his life!!!

Unless he has a health problem, he is not too old. I once had a bltch spayed at 11 years of age, and that's a much more involved procedure.
However, it's unlikely to change the dog's behavior much at this age.

Unfortunately, he might still have some of the inclination to go. However, if he is able to run around at night and get with females, if he was neutered, he wouldn't be able to produce more puppies.

It all depends on his health a vet would have to check him first but the older the dog is the bigger the risk is to the dog

no he is not to old to be neutered, although with his age he can suffer more complications with being put under anesthesia and the surgery its self be if he is out roaming he is at even higher risk for danger than having the surgery
