My daughter's right big toe had an ingrown nail. We soaked it in epsom salts for a few days off and on, and it eventually got soft enough for it to be cut. Now she has a nice, straight across cut that will work well for her as it heals.

Until then, though, the area that had the nail imbedded is very sore and feels almost as bad to her as when the nail was ingrown. We've tried putting a little rubbing alcohol on that area to dry the skin out, but she says it doesn't help.

Anyone have any tips for helping the healing AFTER the nail has been cut?

Cutting the toenail straight accross may or may not help. I had ingrown toenails when I was pregnant with my second child and kept cutting them and cutting them....finally I went to see a podiatrist and he said that the nail had grown into the sides of my toe and cutting them relieved the pain for a while, but it kept coming back. Anyway, they ended up having to cut the toenail away at the sides and kill the root of the nail. Now, my toenails grow straight out and don't touch the skin on the sides of my toes. It was an inexpensive procedure (my insurance paid for it) and I haven't had any ingrown nails (or pain) since it was done.
