Though I realize I'm using a reference talking about Jewish people, David "danced before the Lord with all his might" upon seeing the Ark of the Covenant returned to Israel. A Scripture in Psalms 150 speaks of praising God with the dance. There cannot be any secular connections to the activity though, for God sees dance as a physical expression of worship.

Circle dances were popular in the distant past as well as in the recent past.

Some of the other answers already contain some good points, so here is a scripture.

(NW) Judges 21:21, And YOU must look, and, there now, when the daughters of Shi?loh come on out to dance in circle dances, ...
(NJB) 21Keep watch: when the girls of Shiloh come out in groups to dance

What are the motives for the Dance?
Davis used Dance as a means for worship, and thus, any attempt to a blanket forbidding of dance is Unscriptural!
However, if it is to be used as a means of enticement, especially into Lustful Acts, then it needs to be questioned.

If we dance for the Lord, yes.

If for other reasons, no we should not because of the MUSIC. Also remember that dancing can be sensual and if not with out husbands or wives, it is wrong.

However, if the music is ok and we are dancing with our husband or wife, to Godly music, then yes, we can dance.

Good question.

Psalm 149:3
3 Let them praise His name with the dance;
Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.

Psalm 150:4
4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!

Whatever you do, do it for the Glory of God!
