He doesn't realise he's only looking at himself. To him, he's looking at another cat and the eye contact is what's bothering him - he sees it as a threat and he's being submissive.

The others are right

#1. He thinks he's looking at another cat, not himself

#2. Avoiding eye contact with another cat can prevent a fight. That's what he's trying to do.

Because when a cat meets another cat then locking eyes signifies a challenge. By refusing to look at himself he is effectively backing down. He doesn't realise that he is looking at a reflection.

ps: Your cat is a woos.

Cats are territorial, they've not been to the 'world behind the mirror' so it's not their turf... they act submissive until they know that they can't be reached.
I had a cat who constantly tried to scratch his way to the other side once he realized his mirrior twin couldn't get to him, and one currently who cries when he sees himself, (he has one eye so it actually may scare him with the lack of depth perception)

well, that means he has some lack of self-confidence

maybe he feels that he's ugly.. u have to be open with your cat and tell him that he is so handsome, and he is a woman magnet.. well, female cat magnet..

your cat thinks his reflection is another cat sooo if cats stare in eachothers eyes it means that they want to fight or challenge....so your cat is just backing up....

Why would you want him to? Surely he has better things to be doing (sleeping, staring blankly out of the window, eating).
