A dog(not mine) has a chronic cough for the last 5 months but is otherwise healthy. Great appetite and exercises a lot without hacking or spewing. She must be at least 10 years old.

There are many different things that can make the dog cough or hack. Like Heart worm, Bronchitis, Kennel Cough, Ammonia, Congestive heart failure and the list probably can go on.. Please do the dog a favor and have it checked by a vet. We had a 1 yr. old boxer who coughed after he played and we thought it was a cold or just needing a drink of water. Sadly when we took him to the vet it was rare for his age but he had a hereditary heart condition and died. Please advice the dogs owner to get the dog checked by a vet. Good Luck!

I once suffered from Chronic Bronchitis. I would suffer sometimes 3 to 4 times per year! Usually when there was a major change in the pressure outside (I live in the north, and the temperature spikes and dips do wonders to chronic sufferers of bronchitis!). Each time I would get horrible hacking coughs, hoarking up green phlegm..it was so frustrating!

The key to getting rid of your bronchitis is to find a way to completely eliminate the germs that are causing all the phlegm and irritation leading to your hoarking cough and heavy breathing. Keep reading to learn how to do kill these germs!!

To rule out heartworm, get a simple quick bloodtest at the vets. Thats the only way to know for sure.

Sounds more like congestive heart failure which is marked by a frequent deep raspy cough.
