What are the cabinets now? Are they stained or painted? Are they paint grade or stain grade cabinets?

It's a pain in the butt to stain over paint, you would have to strip them, but you can paint over stain if the wood is paintgrade.

As for colors:
stain color: If you strip and stain them from raw wood, you have many options. I like a color stain, such as Min Wax Wood STain in Green Tea. If you don't want color then I like Min Wax Puritan Pine.

Paint: A very light sage or paint the boxes white and the doors another color such as a light sage or a medium yellow.

If you want to keep it more nutrual...pick stains in the honey or pecan tones, yet if the room is small, low ceiling or low light levels you may not want to go with a stain...it will darken the room..... in that case a paint a shade ligther than your wall color will add light and largeness.....or you could paint them the same as your wall color if you want them to blend in or disappear....hope that helps ;-)

Stick with earth tones if your other stuff is mix and match like ours. Stay with a contrasting yellow, or go off white. I like off white because it helps the lighting in the kitchen when preparing foods. Off white will go with the yellow, too!

That depends on what the rest of your kitchen looks like. Which colors are your fridge, walls, counter, floor, and any other furniture?

I would think blue would be nice. Like the colour of chambray or faded jeans.
