I have chihuahua's and I personally use the harness because... when we walk in the park or public places it is easier to control the dog without causing pain. The collar for a small dog can sometimes be painful if you find yourself and dog in a situation where you need to pull away..

First, don't leave the harness on all the time. I have five chihuahuas, and I use harnesses on all of them. Collars, choke them, harnesses don't, and it's much more comfortable for the dog, and also easier to control the dog. The reason his fur was damaged, is probably because, the harness is too tight. You need to be able to fit 2 fingers, side by side, under the neck and body. They do have all kinds of harnesses to choose from. Go to your local pet store, and I'm sure you'll find one that you like. If you are unsure which one to buy, just ask on of the sales people and they will help you.

I find that it is a good idea to use a harness. I use them on my two chis. Chihuahuas have fragile necks and are prone to collapsed tracheas, something which can be caused by excessive pressure on their little necks, which is easily avoided by using a harness instead of a collar :) Having said this, some people do use a collar and lead with no problems, if the dog is trained to walk properly and is not straining on the lead, then the neck is not under any excessive pressure.

Well Yeah!!! I can't think of a reason why not.
If you can't find a small enough one try a cat harness,
or rabbit, ferret etc.
If you plan on walking your dog (little guys need exercise and fresh air too) then I would highly suggest a harness as
little doggies sometimes have a hard time with pulling
on their necks with collars and leashes (pretty easy to do major damage). Plus its easier to "snatch" them up if you have to (ie Big scary dog comes by) with a harness. So yeah a good harness (fitted at the pet store) and a leash. And you'll be off and running.
****Yeah re-read the question and got it, should have said, please note the tone change mid paragraph!!! LOL Silly me, I'm just getting to used to really dumb questions!
Anyway yes, I think on a little one harnesses work better, for more control etc. and the cat ones do work good if the littlest doggie one doesn't fit.

If you are going to be walking the dog where there is a lot of other (larger) dogs, then a harness is a good idea.
Some larger dogs don't see chi's as fellow dogs, instead they see them as critters to chase. Now, I DON't condone lifting a dog up by it's harness in a normal circumstance: But if the situation ever arose where a large dog came up to you, especially off-leash, and it was acting aggressive towards your dog and you only had a split second to react, then you could you dog quickly lift into your arms using the leash and harness.

well, I have 2...and a harness is the better option...that won't pull on their little necks, but my 2 yr. old wears a collar and she's done fine with it...no straining of the neck or anything like that. I did try the harness thing when she was younger and she hated it. She thought it was a punishment or something. lol Now we have a puppy and he likes both....he's got a totally different personality thatn the other one and he could care less about what's put on him as long as he gets to go. lol I'd just suggest to try both and see which one works best for your little one :)

Put a lightweight snaplock collar with it's dog tags to keep on all the time. Also, I would buy an adjustable harness to walk it. A regular leash/collar may put to much pressure on it's little neck.
They are cute -- have fun with all the cute little clothes!

harnesses make sense for dogs whose necks aren't strong or shouldn't be pulled at too much. so in my opinion this does make sense for such a tiny dog. although i sometimes see people dragging their dogs more if they have harnesses, because it doesn't hurt them as much as if they had collars on. obviously, please don't do that!! even dogs that are that small and controllable must be trained and i would strongly suggest you do the same, that way there will be no pulling or dragging, everybody will be happy (and still in that case, a harness is more comfortable)

I think you should get a harness because its more comfortable for your little pooch and its more safe...if you get those collars they will like choke your dog sometimes but if its with a harness its more comfortable and its less likely to fall off your dog...think if you were a dog would you like someone to tug on a rope attached to your neck or like a harness....like someone tugging on your shirt....think...good luck....

Unfortuneately he needs one. But go easy on the poor thing since they really detest collars.
