One reason that people choose not to believe is that they see Christianity as a "crutch" that Christians lean on so that they won't fall. They don't want to admit that they are hurting and they feel helpless
Another common reason is that they see that Christianity has to be more than just believing, "faith without deeds is dead" and they want to live their life however they want.
There are many other reasons that people resist believing, but most often they root from a lack of knowledge and a prideful attitude that doesn't allow them to admit that they don't know something.
Side Note: Many other religions/atheists will use this same argument against Christians that don't seem to have put any thought into their own beliefs as well.

It is so tiring seeing this same question cropping up over and over and over.
We atheists - and I'm sure that I speak for all - have no doubt that there is no god out there. No doubt. We recognise the facts and that is sufficient. We will not believe in a fairy-tale just in case we are wrong. That is just plainly against our lifestyle choice. A ridiculous suggestion.
The real question is - why do the gullible believe in an archaic myth, when there is not a stitch of credible evidence to suggest that it MAY be true. Not one iota. Further, if logic and reason and scientific fact are applied to the story, it falls apart at the slightest test. THAT'S why we are dead set against believing and it is really about time that the human race in the 21st century stopped this childishness and dumped religion altogether. The morons who cling to their god are patently weak in the intelligence department. There can be no other reason. A lack of a good education, childhood indoctrination and an inability to see what is plainly garbage posing as actuality and being readily accepted. Weird. Really weird.
Your suggestion is that I should do my very best to believe - just in case. Poor understanding demonstrated for all to see.
My suggestion to you is to grow up and grasp reality instead of wasting your life.
My guess is that you are at most 14 years old?

Hate to nitpick, but don't be so lazy and use the proper punctuation. It makes you look uneducated and your question less credible.
As for your question, I'm not sure what you are asking. I'm guessing if you don't believe and you die you would go to hell. Do people really have a reason why they do or do not believe in something? Maybe it's because they can think for themselves and realized that not everything you read is true.

Why are you so set against believing that God doesn't want you to to cling to a belief just because you're scared of the consequences if you don't?
I'm not saying this is true, but it seems more likely than the premise of Pascal's Wager.

Believe all you want, what some people are against is being enslaved to the conjured beliefs of others. If you actually follow everything in religion as taught then you are in bondage because it controls every aspect of your life. If however you choose to make a decision or two for yourself from time to time then it will be very difficult to follow some religious dogma.

You've got me drinking at 5:15 AM. Sigh.
There's an endless supply of people like you - believers who don't know anything at all about religion and spirituality. I'm amazed that so many of you can't see the blindingly obvious flaws in this argument. They're practically smacking you across the forehead, and yet you come here and dutifully type it up and post it as though it made sense.
Forget your question - ask yourself instead "Why have I never put any thought at all into my beliefs?". If religion is so important to you, wouldn't you think you'd make at least a little token effort to understand it?

BigD, doesn't the fact that you have to lie so much about atheists to defend your beliefs tell you something about the quality of your beliefs? It should.

You know, I've wondered that too. Cernunnos is one of my favorites, why wouldn't anyone want to follow the Lord of Nature? But, if someone doesn't believe in Cernunnos, he doesn't torment them for eternity.... maybe that's what he needs? A hell he can hold over other people to enforce belief in him. I'll have to meditate on this and see if he's willing to make a hell for non-Pagans.

You return to dust when you die regardless of whether or not you're a believer. Believing has no bearing on that fact. God told Adam and Eve AFTER they'd been kicked out of Eden, "For dust thou art and to dust thou shalt return." Though I have no doubt in their belief in God, I know that had they NOT sinned, there would be no system of UNBELIEF to erode the body.

Oh, GEE whiz, don't you all give us a break?

BigD, if you don't know why we don't believe, then don't attempt to answer for us. You are guessing from your believer's point of view, and your answers are just plain ludicrous to the non-believer.
Shortcake, take notice: if you choose an answer from BigD or any other believer, then i'll know that you didn't want a real answer to your question.

Holy cow. What are they going to say when I get to work with liquor on my breath? Good old Pascal's wager.
Its not a matter of being set against believing. Its a matter of being honest with myself. I used to be a christian, a serious one, in fact. I finally realized that I was forcing myself to believe things I knew were not true. I feel much better about myself for my honesty. I don't want to live my life in fear.
