The term I'm thinking of is something like "gens arms" but I know I quite ignorant on the subject and apologise to any French people and ask that they forgive a poor monolingual Australian

I agree with Graham.
You can either say "gendarme" or "agent de police".

It's basically the same, the main difference between the two is that a "gendarme" is affiliated to the French army, and the police belongs to the Home Office. But in practice, their duties are roughly the same.

You appear to be thinking of the "gendarmes" - pronounced "zhawn-darm" (zh=the same sound as "s" in measure and leisure)

The standard word for police officer is "agent de police"

A popular colloquial word is "flic" (=cop)
