If you are doing it as a 'lap' baby I think 6 hours would be a bit rough. You should consider buying him an infant fare so you'll get your own seat.

If you can, you might want to keep them up on the drive to the airport, etc, so they are more likely to sleep on the plane. If you take your car seat on board, the car seat will have to be put on the window seat (so you'll be in the middle seat, probably). If you do this, also see if the window seat in front of you is taken as that seat will not be able to recline with a baby seat in back.

Be sure to pack 2x of pretty much everything--passifiers, toys, bottles, as in the confines of an airplane seat, things drop on the floor a lot (and those floors are dirty). You might also want to bring some wipes, etc.

Babies cry. Other passengers will understand that (and if they don't, screw them). That said, anything you can do to soothe the baby will be appreciated. If you are one of those 'let them cry it out moms' or are trying to discipline the child to do things a certain way--fussing is ignored, then I think you should drop your rules for the 6 hours and just get everyone to the other end peacefully.

Good luck.

Babies don't do well on airplanes.

Sure, you can take your child--the airline won't stop you (most likely) but you would have to do one of the following 2 things:

1) Hold the baby on your lap for the whole 6 hours
2) Buy a ticket for the baby

Hey, I know you love your baby, but holding for six hours nonstop will wear down even the strongest mother! So you're looking at buying two tickets.

PROBLEM: Changes in air pressure that regularly occur on airplanes can cause pain to your baby--because the baby doesn't know how to pop his or her ears yet. Add to that the confines, the strange place, the strange people, and the smells (not all bad, but just different) and an airplane can be a very strange place for a six-month old. This is why babies cry on airplanes.

When babies cry on airplanes, it affects pretty much everyone within three rows. The close space reverberates the sound and is disturbing to those around.

So taking a baby on a six hour flight is not a very good thing for anyone concerned.

Yet, people do it. I'll never understand why...

The first person to answer is correct. However, we flew from Hawaii and someone had baby right in front of us. The baby cried for hours. It could be because of the altitude change and hurt it's ears. Please be respective of others when you fly with your baby and do what you can to keep him calm and at least relatively quiet. In other words, snacks, juice, stuffed toys, blanket or whatever calms your baby at home may work well on the plane also. Have a good trip!

I took my child on a flight when she was under a year old and she did just fine. You just need to bring the normal things that you always bring and make sure you use the lavoratory if you need anything. It is also useful if you can't get the child to calm down and people give you funny looks.
