A Doctorate ( Masters degree)
is a degree of excellence! PHD.

It is over and above, the university degree,
they already hold, in that subject

any one who has a Doctorate degree
can call themselves Doctor ( before their names )

eg.
Dr of Science
Dr of Medicine
Dr of Mathematics
Dr of Psychology
etc.
----------------------------------------------
Just to confuse matters
a Dr of Surgery ( a surgeon) is addressed as 'Mr '.
---------------------------------------------------
in addition Doctors -- are entitled to show letters after their name
eg;
( master of arts) ..MA
(Fellow of the royal collage of surgeons )...... FR CS

I hope this answers your question

A registered dietitian with a PhD would be addressed as Dr. ______. A nutritionist is not a credible title. Registered Dietitians have at least a bachelor's degree (with at least 16 nutrition classes, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, psychology, etc and a year internship (practical experience). They also pass a national exam to become certified. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist - beware! Even medical doctors, chiropractors, and pharmacists do not take more than one nutrition course in their standard curriculum. Registered dietitians are the nutrition experts, and can be addressed as Dr.'s as well!

I assume physiologist works the same way......

Doctor means teacher (look it up) and anyone with an advanced doctoral degree is entitled to be addressed "Doctor" but it may be customary to show the person's name followed by PhD (Doctor of philosophy or JD (Juris Doctor, a lawyer), etc. Even RN's may be Doctors of Nursing. You don't need to be a Doctor of Music to consider 'ear' problems or a Doctor of Letters to spell words. At one time physicians received their Doctoral degrees before studying for their Masters degrees (Master Doctors like master plumbers?).
