My guess is that your friend possibly made the advanced arrangement that SHE would be picking up the check.
That be the case, then what the waiter did, makes sense.
Otherwise, it doesn't make sense and you are correct, to find it odd.
Ask your friend about it!

Is your friend older? Sometimes, they just assume the older person is a relative or a "boss" that will be paying for the check.
Other then that maybe the waiter was just a buttmunch, usually when I dine out they ask if you want one or two checks, and then the person who says "one" they give the bill to. I think its odd.
I hope you left a crappy tip.

Perhaps she looked more mature or acted that way, perhaps she looked like she had more money or perhaps he was gender unbiased. I am a lady and it irks me that waiters often assume that I would allow the gentleman at my table to pay. Perhaps you need to broaden your scope and learn that the world is changing. Instead of taking offense just take the check and pay it. It is extremely uncomplicated to do the right thing. Sitting around mulling over imagined insults can lead to incredible misunderstandings. Just save the drama and angst for the important things in life. (The situation you described is not one of them.)
