Galvanised sheet has zinc coating on it, which makes it corrosion (rusting) resistant. This is because zinc is anodic to steel. Therefore, in exposed applications, fencing, roofing etc it is used to prevent rusting. For mild steel you need to paint to use it for exposed applications. Also, a specific type of galvanisation (galvannealing) gives fantastic paint finish (glaze). So, many of the high end car panels are galvanised before they are painted.
