BP International Hotel, Nathan Hotel, or Shamrock Hotel in Jordan, a few minutes walk from TST.
Of the 3 BP International is the best.
All 3 are the cheapest in the area.
The guides seem very expensive, it might be better to book here. April isn't the busy season.
If you judge by the guide price, I would expect to pay half that as a local.
If you absolutely had to, Mirador Mansions on Nathan Road TST has very cheap, bed and a shower rooms. The whole building is full of backpacker hostels. They all keep rooms for when a backpacker has had enough of the dormitories.

My brother used to work in HK for these people,

it's a good guide, but shop around for prices.
TsimShaTsui is how we usually write it, and us locals stay well out of it. It's a tourist rip-off area. The rest of HongKong is much better.

The Evergreen Hotel is worth a look too, same area (Jordan)

Word of advice, the YMCA isn't cheap. Mid-price (but we are talking Hong Kong). The nearest real YMCA is not far away (10min taxi or 1/2 hr walk). The one in TST is a real hotel.

I agree with Simon D. I stayed in Mirador Mansions when I was in HK last October. The building was accessible to all cheap and expensive shops in the area. It's just along Nathan Road and the Victoria Harbour is just a walking distance from Mirador. Just don't expect a very nice room but at least they have an in room bath and toilet. One advise, be sure to pay your daily room fee in the daytime, if not, you will hear disturbing knocks on your door in the middle of the night. Good luck.
