If tomorrow you could wake up and there were no planes emitting exhaust into the air, all the factories shut down, all cars, trucks and pollutant emitting vehicles vanished, cell phones all gone, computers gone,...cigarettes gone,...yet it sent the world on a path of healing,...could you give it all up & go back to the horse & buggy stage if it meant saving our planet ?

NO WAY! I agree with Helmut.....it would be a nightmare. The human race needs vast amounts of energy and to continue our efforts in medicine, space, the arts, and self improvement we are going to need more. Jerry Pournelle lays out in his book 'A Step Farther Out' , published 1980, the situation we find outselves in and direct answers to them. I was about to go on a rant...in summary...the root cause of our economic, political, and environmental problems is the gripping dependence on fossil fuels for our survival.

Imagine waking up tomorrow and everything is rolling along just fine and emitting water vapor because it's running on the fabulous little molecule of H2. There will be a number of problems yet to overcome but at least we won't have to kill each other for oil, we won't have to breathe toxic chemicals, and we won't have to spend more than we spend today at the fueling station.

No, the horses needed are gone, as well as the buggies. If all our technology disappeared overnight there would be such a death toll as you can scarcely imagine. Before the day was out there would be gang warfare in nearly all cities, certainly in all cities with populations greater than 100,000. The dead would go unburied and the vermin feeding on them would multiply. All our cute pets would go feral, reverting to preying on anything they could for food. There would be cannibalism in all major cities before the end of the week. You think we have pollution now? Consider the stench of no waste or sewage disposal, and add to that the stench of rotting corpses. I think I'm glad that I would be one of the first to cash in under those circumstances.
