People cling to religion because they're too lazy to figure out the answers for themselves. It's easier to let someone else tell you it's a certain way; and if your parents believed it, you'll probably end up believing it, statistically speaking.

Getting people to confront the reality before them without flinching or feeling fear is the only way I see for people to transcend that crap. But fear runs rampant.

Wait a second, you're blaming all of mankind's problems on a BOOK?
Do we not make our own choices? Do WE not decide to wage war, pollute the air, litter, and have sex outside marriage?
How can RELIGION be blamed for what WE choose to do? WE divide ourselves, WE have "over-populated" the earth. NOT religion!

By the way, I have NO problem with contraceptives whatsoever, other than the fact that they give people a false sense of security. The ONLY safe sex is NO sex!
AIDS has spread because people are STUPID!

And by the way, sex is NOT EVER a sin if it's done within marriage.

Don't be ridiculous.

If one goes back to the beginning of this Earth age, and believe Cain killed his brother Able, then you will clearly see that religion is not the cause of any of the troubles or problems in the world
rather, the seven deadly sins starting with Satan himself who was full of pride, thus getting licked out of heaven and sentenced to death in the end (the only "soul" that has a death sentence to this day..all others still have the opportunity to live forever...(consider this personally)
Again, it is a matter of faith, not mans' ideology of evolution(that's another whole topic in and of itself.)

Pride.. is excessive belief in ones own abilities, that interferes with the individuals recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy.. is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Gluttony.. is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lust ..is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Anger.. is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

Greed.. is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

Problem 1: Faith doesn't cause wars, people do.
Problem 2: If people practiced abstinence until marriage 100% of the time (while it may be improbable) aids would cease to exist.
Problem 3: Nowhere in the Bible does it say that sex should be used only for procreation. Much to the contrary, Song of Solomon praises sexuality between a husband and wife as a beautiful act to be enjoyed mutually.
Problem 4: There is no logical connection between the Bible and global warming.
Thank you for your question and your time.

Hi Dave,
Oh, how I share some of your feelings about the negative results of religion!
Nevertheless, we must keep the faith by focusing on truth, the facts that science has offered us, and by living our own conviction.
You cannot convince anyone of anything they don't want to be convinced of. By example, christians have tried to convince people of other faiths (heathens) to the christian religions - often by giving a choice to 'convert or die'.
The whole idea of 'non-religious living' is one of 'freedom', and in that, you must allow freedom to the believers of ill-edited books such as the so-called 'good book'.
It is an exercise of faith in your own convictions to let these people GO and just live your life the way you see fit.
The rub is to shrug off the 'majority judgment'. Do that, and set yourself FREE.

I agree that religion is moving us towards extinction, hardly anybody feels the need to conserve our planet as people think that there will be a babysitter looking out and "returning" to us, that he will obviously come back before we destroy ourselves.

A lot of people don't seem to understand my point, or there is some flaw to it that is obvious to everyone but me, but this is how I feel on things

It is next to impossible, we can't force, because then that makes martyrs, we just need to educate, europe is ahead if I have heard correctly, here in the USA we have some catching up and educating to do. (improve our education systems!)

The Bible isn't driving people to self destruction. People do that all on their own. You can't lay this at God's feet. God loves the sinner, but hates the sin and that is what it boils down to, we're all sinners.
