I am arriving into JFK from Australia at 9.00am. My next flight is to Miami at 3.40pm then onto Cayman Is. I won't be leaving the airport. Do I still have to go through any kind of customs at JFK? I won't have a US visa and I know they are very strict about letting people in (even though I wont be going into the USA).

Yes, you will need to enter through US Immigration and Customs. Depending upon what passport you hold, you may not be required to have a US visa.

Prior to your trip, confirm which visas you will need with the Embassies of the countries you want to travel through or to.

You will need to go through immigration. Transit visas almost don't exist - and have virtually the same requirements as a tourist visa anyway, so you're no better off.

The JFK-Miami flight is likely to be domestic (you don't mention the flight number so it's hard to tell) so you will definitely need to enter the country for that one.

Have lunch in the Big Apple or something.

i have never flew from Australia but on any international flight you have to go through customs when you enter the U.S. I think if you stay in the airport you should be ok but you may want to call the airline they can probably help you if not you could try to call 1-800-fed-info (thats a US number) it may have some information that could be helpful or try your embassy.
