Well, there are different types of chihuahuas. Some have long legs and have been nicknamed "deer" for their long legs. And then the ones with smaller legs and bigger heads are known as "apple heads" which are what most people think of chihuahuas. The bigger guys are great pets for households with kids. The tiny ones are more likely to get stepped on are seriously hurt unlike the larger more sturdy pups.

And many people will say they aren't purebred by that may be untrue. I have seen many purebred chichuahuas that aren't tiny. Just because they aren't show quality doesn't mean they arn't purebred

Yes, you used to see more of these years ago. It's a breed fault according to the AKC standard and so are the very large ears that go with this type. Personally, I like this type chihuahua but the breeders and showers find it atrocious.

They may have at some time or another been crossed with manchesters to acquire this look.

Show dogs are often much much different from the "real" breed. Show people like to give them deformities or change them so they all look like exact clones of each other. A deer-type chihuahua is no less purebred than an applehead. I personally like the more authentic looks than the tiny dog with the big head.

These are some mixed breed dogs that people pon off as "deer chihuahua", they are not recognized by the American Kennal Club standards as being a breed! Each breed has conformation standards that should be met and a chihuahua who could play basketball does not qualify.
