Basically, it is based on yours and your spouse's income and savings. It is one of the methods to determine if a person is an independent student or not by the FAFSA. A percentage of the income and savings will be assigned to the EFC which is Estimated Family Contribution. From there, the college or university determines your need based financial aid package. Just remember, to check the box for married before submitting it because it can't be changed for the calendar year otherwise. Good luck!
