The goat head is a reference of the Greek god Pan or Panas. He was the main rival of Christianity at the early beginnings.
Therefor the early Christians characterized this pagan god with Satan.
In fact Pan is anything other that Satan. He is a fun loving, wine drinking, womanizer god. He is a force of nature and symbol of well being and fertility.
Of course Christians couldn't and still cannot accept that.

Go do a web search on The Church Of Satan go to the web page and you will find out more about what they are about.
The official church of Satan was founded by a man named Anton Sazdor La Vey in 1969. The signal of Baphomet which is the goats head is actually the Greek God of furtilty.
Hollywood distorted Satanism completly, Let me just make myself clear I am not a Satanist. I just did some extensive research on the matter. Especialy after watching the movie Omen. I did not even know that such a church exsisted.

When Christianity began to gain more followers and wanted still more, Pagan beliefs were recast as evil. The Horned God of the Wood (representing fertility and the hunt) was named Satan and Christian leaders at the time told everyone that he was evil and the enemy of God.
They basically took what was already present in their culture and gave it their own twist to convert Pagans to Christianity.
Satan was not an entity at all until the Christians invented him. Witches, Wiccans, et al, don't even believe in a Satan.
Satanism should not be lumped with earth-based religions in any way. After all, the whole Satan thing originated with Christianity and should therefore be categorized with Christianity and not with what was already established before it.
It's like one of those word problems kids are given in elementary school math class; like "Which one doesn't belong? Grapes, hammer, screwdriver, wrench." Except in this case it's Wicca, Witchcraft, Druidism, Satanism. The Satanism doesn't belong.

As far as the satanic symbol if you draw a five point star with the two points up those represent the horns, the side points are the ears flopping down and the bottom point is the snout of the nose. I don't know why a goat is used as the symbol as opposed to a horse or zebra but we are not to question satan

Why? Because the devil "Satan" is purported to have a goats head by Bible thumpers.
Another reason is because Satan represents their basic belief, Wisdom, Knowledge, and a lack of fear to question authority.
It has been established among informed Satanists that Satan didn't really exist, he is just an archetype literary figure that represents their beliefs.

Because the catholic church said it is.
It isn't a symbol of satanism. It doesn't have anything to do with satanism. It's the symbol for Baphomet.

Because they wanted to discredit Pan and the followers of Greek religions.
